Elementary

Academic Games (Math, Language Arts, SS)

Academic Games is a scholastic competition where students compete with other students from their grade levels. Competition is held throughout Palm Beach County as well as the State of Florida and Nationally. Academic Games is open to students in grades 4-12. Mathematics, Language Arts, and Social Studies are the core subjects for the various games. Players often learn and apply important concepts in these subjects before they are learned in school. Strategy, in addition to knowledge, is a key component in each of the three Academic Games competitions. Players will also develop courage, character, and poise in applying their knowledge while competing against opponents. Players compete for Individual and Team awards

Math Games will be from September-October

Language Arts Games will be from October – November

Social Studies Games will be from January – February

Competitions are on Tuesdays after school and practices are held Monday & Tuesday after school and Wednesday & Thursday before school at 7:00 a.m.

C.H.A.N.G.E. - Children Helping Neighbors Granting Encouragement

Formerly known as the Penny Harvest, C.H.A.N.G.E. - Children Helping Neighbors Granting Encouragement is for 4th, 5th & 6th grade students. The purpose is to raise funds to support and promote academic service learning at our school and within our community.

C.H.A.N.G.E. will meet after school until 3:30 on select Thursdays from October through May. Students will be provided with a monthly calendar of meeting dates. Pick-up will be in the 2nd circle (East circle).

FAUS Triathlon Club

Triathlon is an up and coming sport. More and more students are getting involved with it every year. It is so vital to get up and be active. This club promotes a healthy lifestyle not only learning about healthy habits, but also exercising to keep your body healthy. We will have special guests speaking to the students throughout the year. The students will also be getting a chance to organize and participate in the 3rd annual FAUS triathlon. We will work with you to teach you better swimming, biking and running techniques as well as work together to implement and organize the 2013 FAUS Kids Triathlon. This club is open to students in grades K–12.

Running Club

Running Club is open to students in grades K-8. We run every Friday that is not a noon dismissal day from November through April. Activities include running, soccer, kickball, football and other sports…as long as we're running! Elementary running club is from 2:30 until 3:30 and Middle School runs from 2:45 until 3:45. Be sure to wear your running shoes! We will not run if there is inclement weather or lightning. Check “News and Announcements” on the homepage of our website or your email as an AlertNow email will be sent out if Running Club is cancelled. Please plan for pick up at 2:45 in case this happens.

Spelling Bee

A.D. Henderson participates in the Scripps Spelling Bee. The Scripps Spelling Bee is the nation's largest and longest-running educational promotion, administered on a not-for-profit basis by The E.W. Scripps Company and local spelling bee sponsors. The purpose of the Spelling Bee is to help students improve their spelling, increase their vocabularies, learn concepts, and develop correct English usage that will help them all their lives. Students prepare for the spelling bee by practicing a list of words provided by Scripps. Students may advance to the next level by winning their local bee. Our Spelling bee will be conducted in the winter. We will have a K-3 bee and a 4-8 bee.

Upper Elementary Science Club

This club is for 4th & 5th grade students. The purpose is to enrich the science curriculum through the promotion of environmental awareness and protection. Students will plant native species, participate in campus clean-ups, help organize Earth Day events and work with many community partners on environmental issues.

Word Hawks Elementary Language Arts Club

This club is for 4th and 5th grade students. The purpose is to enrich the language arts curriculum through drama and reader's theater as well as through creative writing, figurative language, poetry and other literary devices.

MS/HS Band Club

The band program offers before school (7:30 - 8:00 am) and after school (2:45 - 4:00) time in the band room for those students who want additional help or for those students that would like to get ahead in band. Mr. Goff will guide and direct students as they strive to become better musicians. During this time the students will begin to prepare for the District 14 Florida Bandmasters Association Solo and Ensemble Event as well as All-State preparations.

Geography Bee

The Geography Bee is challenging competition of geographic knowledge sponsored by the National Geographic Society. All middle school students are eligible to participate in preliminary competition held in December. Finalists move ahead to extra rounds in January to determine a school winner. The school winner takes a qualifying test to move on to the state competition over Spring Break and compete for monetary prizes.

Math Jr. Honor Society

Middle School Math Honor Society - Chi Alpha Mu is designed to promote enjoyment and understanding of mathematics by middle school students. Some of our activities throughout the year will be a monthly Math tutoring for grades 3-5, the Palm Beach County Middle School Math competition, the AMC8 Math Competition held at FAU in November, Year round Equations as part of Academic Games, Middle School Pi week, and fun events related to Math or Community service. Meetings will begin in Late September and be held 1-2 times a month in Mr. Phibbs' room 156.

National Junior Honor Society

The purpose of the A.D. Henderson University School National Junior Honor Society is to create enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote leadership, to develop character, and to encourage good citizenship in students. Seventh and eighth grade students can apply to join the NJHS in the fall and all middle school students can apply to join in January. Check the Edmodo calendar for meeting dates and upcoming events. Safety Patrol

Safety Patrol is open to students in grades 6 – 8. Students that demonstrate strong citizenship and good character are eligible to apply for Safety Patrol. Safety Patrol duties include three weeks of morning duty per semester and other duties as assigned throughout the school year. Morning duty entails arriving at 7:30 am and assisting students exiting their cars and entering the school campus safely.

Student Government

Student Government is open to all students in grades 6-8 who want to make a positive impact, have a voice, and develop their leadership skills. Students participate in both elected and non-elected positions and have a chance to be involved in the planning of school activities such as dances and student appreciation days. Meetings are held monthly from 3:00-4:30 on the first Monday of the month.

High School Chorus

High School Chorus meets in the high school music room on Friday's from 2:45-3:30 every week. The ensemble is open to all students 9th through 12th grades. We participate in Allstate, Solo/Ensemble, MPA's, District Honor Choirs, and other University Honor Choir Festivals. We also perform at school concerts and at the high school graduation in May. This ensemble offers students the opportunity for performing in a large ensemble as well as solo opportunities.

FAUHS Newspaper

The Hoot is the high school newspaper. It provides informative and entertaining information to the FAUHS community. The Hoot will meet bi-monthly to discuss new ideas and columns. If you enjoy writing The Hoot is the place for you! We will be looking for staff writers, editors and artists to help us make The Hoot the best that it can be. The Hoot will be distributed via the website to all FAUHS students. Please see Mrs. Rosenblum for more information.

Interact Club

Interact is a community service club sponsored by the Rotary International for high school students to further international understanding and goodwill. Interactors develop a network of friendships and learn the importance of leadership skills, personal integrity, helpfulness and respect for others.

Interact Club is open to students in grades 9 - 12 and meets on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of every month at 3:00 pm in room in the HS Science Lab.

International Thespian Society (ITS)

International Thespian Society is a drama honor society chartered by FAUHS in 2011. The ITS club meets weekly and participates in the District Thespian Festival. Students who enjoy theater, both performing and technical, will enjoy being a part of this creative troupe. The ITS is a wonderful way to show versatility and creativity in a fun, non-threatening environment. Some areas of competition include solo, duet, and group musical and acting numbers, Costume design, set design, publicity, and more! Please see Mrs. Rosenblum for more information.

Math Ambassadors

Whether students wish to realize it or not, math is everywhere. Math is the language of science and as such, it plays an increasingly vital part of our world today. FAU High School Math Ambassadors members encourage students to see math success as achievable and even exciting by sharing their experiences and by offering young minds help through tutoring.

Math Ambassadors is continuously looking for excelling math students who are able to tutor at least an hour a week. Tutoring is available for FAU High School Students as well as for our Henderson students. Regular meetings are held on Fridays from 3-4 pm; there is no math meeting on half days. Individual tutoring sessions are offered throughout the week.

Mock Trial

Mock Trial is a club that competes locally at the County Courthouse in West Palm Beach. Students have the opportunity to compete against other high schools as both attorneys and witnesses in either a civil or criminal trial. The Mock Trial team consists of 8 members, each of whom may participate in more than one role. We are fortunate to have attorney coaches who work with our students to prepare for the competition. Mock trial is an audition only club. Any interested students will need to try out for a place on this exciting team! Please see Mrs. Rosenblum for more information.

Model United Nations

The FAU High School Model United Nations Club encourages global perspective through an academic simulation of the United Nations that aims to educate participants about current events, topics in international relations, diplomacy and the United Nations. In May, we attend the UNAUSAMUN conference held in the UN headquarters in New York City and simulate working as an ambassador for an assigned country. It is a wonderful, once in a lifetime opportunity to go to the UN and meet other high school students from all over the world.

The MUN is open to students in grades 9 - 12 and meets on the 1st and 3rd Thursday of every month at 3:00 in Room HS116, Mrs. Barkes' classroom.

National Honor Society

National Honor Society (NHS) honors those students who have demonstrated excellence in areas of scholarship, leadership, service and character. The purpose of NHS is to create enthusiasm for scholarship, stimulate a desire for service, promote leadership and develop character.

NHS membership is an honor bestowed upon a student and selection is by majority vote of the NHS faculty council. Membership decision is based on scholarship, leadership, service, character and citizenship. For more details, please contact faculty advisors.

Science Olympiad

Open to 8th grade students, Science Olympiad competitions are like academic track meets, consisting of a series of 23 team events in each division (Division B is middle school; Division C is high school). Each year, a portion of the events are rotated to reflect the ever-changing nature of genetics, earth science, chemistry, anatomy, physics, geology, mechanical engineering and technology. By combining events from all disciplines, Science Olympiad encourages a wide cross-section of students to get involved. Emphasis is placed on active, hands-on group participation.

Through Science Olympiad, students, teachers, parents, principals and business leaders bond together and work toward a shared goal. Teamwork is a required skill in most scientific careers today, and Science Olympiad encourages group learning by designing events that forge alliances.
