National School Lunch Program, Reimbursable Meals

Wednesday, Jan 29, 2025

A.D. Henderson University School and Florida Atlantic University High School participate in the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) and the School Breakfast Program (SBP). These programs are designed to give participating students nutritious meals by offering a variety of fruits, vegetables, meat or meat alternatives, and beverages.

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) determines the meal pattern requirements for the food components schools must offer during a meal and sets allowances for the minimal number of food components a student must take to comprise a reimbursable meal. For breakfast, there are four food components (fruit, grain, fluid milk, and protein); students must select three. For lunch, students must take at least three of the five components (protein, vegetable, fruit, grain, and fluid milk). One selection must be at least ½ cup from the fruit or vegetable component. Water does not count as one of the three required food components and cannot be served as a substitute for milk.

Students who qualify for free or reduced meals under these programs and purchase a meal MUST select at least three components to be considered a reimbursable meal.Selection of less than three components or omission of the fruit component will not meet the USDA guidelines of an NSLP meal. Therefore, the selected food item(s) will be charged as a la carte food item(s), meaning you will be responsible for payment.

We strongly encourage parents to discuss how to select a reimbursable meal with their students. This will help students quickly build a reimbursable meal and is especially important to avoid charges at the point of service. Our cafeteria has posted meal component signage on the selection line as a reminder of the food component guidelines for breakfast and lunch.

Parents / Guardians can create a meal account for their child. You can view and set reminders to receive an email when balances fall below a certain set amount, view your students’ transactions, and restrict items for purchase. To pay for meals on your student’s account please click on the link if your student is in elementary or middle school or high school
