During President Kelly's last FAU Commencement ceremony last week, President Kelly awarded Dr. Joel Herbst with The President's Distinguished Service Medallion. This recognition is presented to "individuals who have rendered service of great value to Florida Atlantic University and the community at large." Established in 1991, the first President's Distinguished Service Medallion was awarded to FAU benefactor Charles Schmidt in appreciation of his transformative gifts to the university.
Dr. Herbst is an outstanding and passionate leader, and his vision and passion for education are helping FAU distinguish itself as an innovator in the early college high school space. Since joining FAU in 2012, Dr. Herbst's leadership at FAU Lab Schools has seen multiple school-wide recognitions, including a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence, a National Green Ribbon School, the #2 Best Public Elementary School in America according to Niche, and even an expansion of FAU High School to the Jupiter campus in partnership with Max Planck Academy.
"We are truly thankful for his extraordinary involvement at FAU," said President Kelly. "His leadership of, and commitment to, this university will benefit current and future Owls for generations to come."
