THE CANE INSTITUTE IS REGIONAL WINNER OF TOSHIBA AND NATIONAL SCIENCE TEACHING ASSOCIATION’S 30TH ANNUAL EXPLORAVISION CHALLENGE

Students from The Cane Institute at A.D. Henderson University School are the Region 3 winner, grades 4-6, of the 30th annual ExploraVision challenge, with the student project, The Replenishanator. The annual ExploraVision challenge is the largest K-12 science competition designed to build problem-solving, critical thinking, and collaboration skills.
The Replenishanator
, made up of 5th grade students Spencer Frankel, Miles Selznick, and Lars Erik Wiik, will advance to the national phase of the competition, where participants will have a chance to win $10,000 U.S. Series EE Savings Bonds and other great prizes. Members of the 23 winning teams have each received a Chromebook to support the development of virtual posters, a website, and videos for the national phase of the competition.
The Replenishanator helps with deforestation using technology to improve the replanting process. The Replenishanator utilizes a modified drone with a pressurized seed gun to carry a smart seedling for planting to help reforest the planet. The smart seedlings are encapsulated in a pod containing everything needed to optimize the seedling’s ability to be successfully planted. The Replenishanator will be loaded with other technologies allowing for additional research and improvements. The Replenishanator will help the environment and address climate change.
This year’s regional winners include innovative ideas ranging from drones that to help reduce the carbon footprint to virtual reality technologies for pain management.
ExploraVision participants were challenged to come up with potential solutions to solve problems that may existing in ten years or more. Using real scientific research, students outlined methods to plan and test their ideas. In the next phase of competition, the winning regional teams will be asked to build webpages and short videos to communicate and exhibit their ideas to the public.
In the next phase of competition, the 23 regional winners, including The Cane Institute, will advance to the national level. Members of first place national-winning teams each receive a $10,000 U.S. Series EE Savings Bond (at maturity). Members of second place nationally winning teams will each receive a $5,000 U.S. Series EE Savings Bond (at maturity). Canadian winners receive Canada bonds purchased for the equivalent issue price in Canadian dollars. The Toshiba/NSTA ExploraVision ceremony concludes with an awards luncheon and ceremony, where winners will be formally recognized for their creativity and accomplishments.
Along with winning the region, The Cane Institute students walked away with multiple 2021-2022 Toshiba/NSTA ExploraVision Honorable Mentions. The Honorable Mention award places team's projects among the top 10% of all ExploraVision projects submitted to the competition this year.

Since its inception in 1992, close to 450,000 students from across the United States and Canada have participated in the ExploraVision program. For 30 consecutive years, the program has helped children to expand their imagination and have fun while developing an interest in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education at an early age.
